Winter Hunger in Lebanon

As the weather gets colder, the devastating effects of the economic crisis and COVID-19 leave Lebanese and Syrian families trying to stay warm and avoid famine.The economic crisis in Lebanon, which has pushed almost all of the country’s refugee population into abject poverty, promises to make this year even more difficult.Lebanon’s economic disaster has forced the country’s currency to collapse, sending the price of food, fuel, and other necessities surging, exacerbated by rising COVID-19 cases and the 2020 Beirut port explosion.The crisis has caused havoc on the country, with nine out of ten Syrian refugees now living in abject poverty and half of the refugee population suffering from food insecurity. The deteriorating crisis is causing havoc on Lebanese society, pushing both Lebanese and refugee families to make difficult decisions.The UN Refugee Agency, UNHCR, has increased its assistance to needy Lebanese and refugee families across the country, but the crisis has turned an already difficult position into a daily struggle for existence.
