
At a beach house on Edisto Island, South Carolina, United States, tourists found 200-year-old human remains. When the tourists realized the remains were human, they called the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office, having initially mistaken them for fossils.
The remains were discovered in the Jeremy Cay neighborhood next to Legare Road, a historically significant location that was formerly the site of the Edingsville Beach settlement in the 19th century, according to media reports.
The Edisto Beach Police Department and the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office arrived on the site and cordoned off the area for further investigation. Following assistance from the Colleton County Coroner’s Office, the remains were taken to the Medical University of South Carolina for identification and forensic examination.
The circumstances surrounding the person’s death and the origin of the remains are being carefully investigated by authorities. As additional information becomes available, updates will be given. The person’s identity is yet unknown.
