The hairy frog (Trichobatrachus robustus), also referred to as the ‘wolverine frog’ or ‘horror frog,’ is perhaps one of the most peculiar and eye-catching creatures on earth found in Central African region.
The claws, which are only present on the hind feet and are tucked away inside a mass of connective tissue, are their most intriguing feature. Made entirely of bone rather than collagen, these claws are attached to a muscle at one end.
By deliberately breaking its own toe bones, it creates claws that may rake across an attacker by penetrating the skin.
These terrestrial frogs have small lungs, and the male’s ability to breathe during mating gets enhanced by the hair-like skin strands. From snout to vent, males are about 10 to 13 cm or 4 to 5 in), while females measure 8 to 11 cm or 3 to 4.5 in.
