Politicians should remember that journalists have the right to act as eyes and ears of the public.Hostile attitudes towards media is a dangerous and alarming trend.Polarization even in media, saddens us the most. After all nationalist and popular leaders and their cronies use powerful instrument like television news to influence public opinion by controlling them.
Party aligned media’s partisan and biased reporting often misled the public. But those so called popular anchors and journalists forget the notion that it is the duty of a journalist to keep a tab on the ruling government’s work and question for matters of national interest. In Journalism there is no left or right.
In India, anchors and journalists of news channels particularly national news channels and some regional channels they all knew, of course, that they were giving the viewers false information specially in sensitive issues like recent Pahalgam terrorist attack on tourists. The exceptions are those who sincerely support government policies. Some of them are attempting to present themselves as hardcore nationalists. They might be acting, or they might actually be that way. Most of them, however, are just regular people who happened to find themselves in this circle and are forced to make a living by following channel policies. There are a lot of dependent people who must say what they are told. But remember, this high profile anchors and journalists who are now spitting venom while spreading communal hatred to polarize the society would be saying something entirely different when the government changed.
