The Digital India Act (DIA) is being proposed by the Indian Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology to replace the existing IT Act of 2000.
Open internet, online safety and trust, accountability and quality of service, adjudicatory mechanisms, and emerging technologies like artificial intelligence and personal data security will all be covered by this new act.
According to Press Information Bureau (PIB),the purpose of the future-ready Digital India Act, 2023, is to replace the existing IT Act and establish a robust legislative framework to support India’s technological objectives. It is a major component of the global standard cyber regulations that the Narendra Modi government is developing to boost India’s digital economy.
The Information Technology Act (IT Act), which regulates the internet in India is inadequate in addressing issues such as user rights, trust, and safety. It is also inadequate to handle increasingly complex cybercrimes, such as online trolling, doxxing, and cyberstalking.
