A pro-Russian hacker group called NoName057(16) is well-known for its cyberattacks against European, American, and Ukrainian government, media, and private company websites. Considered a free and unstructured pro-Russian activist group, it aims to garner notice in Western nations.
In March 2022, the group first claimed responsibility for DDoS attacks against the Ukrainian news and media websites Fakty UA, Zaxid, and others.
Europol and Eurojust, two European Union agencies, organized a cooperative international investigation called Eastwood that targeted the cybercrime network NoName057 between July 14 and July 17 (16).
Political developments influenced the group’s target selection. They first targeted Ukrainian websites. Subsequently, they extended their attacks to NATO countries and organizations supporting Ukraine. During the European elections, they launched certain hacks that targeted Swedish government websites and financial institutions.
The NATO summit in the Netherlands and the Ukrainian president’s address to the Swiss parliament were among the significant political events that they timed their attacks to coincide with.
