Often referred to as a romance scam, the pig butchering scam is a persistent deception that blends bitcoin fraud, romance scams, and investment schemes. The name of this fraud, which has its origins in Southeast Asia, comes from the Chinese phrase ‘Shāz Hū Pán,’ which means butchering pigs. Scammers that use cryptocurrencies look for victims on social media and dating websites.
A scammer, often known as the “host,” contacts a victim online by sending a ‘wrong number’ text message, using social media, or using a dating app. Hosts maintain continuous communication to establish a rapport after identifying a suitable target, the figurative ‘pig.’ The host urges the victim to begin cryptocurrency trading after gaining their trust. The host will say that huge returns are normal and that they have family ties or intimate knowledge in the investment business.
They urge the victim to use an app or fake investing platform that appears to be legitimate. They might even offer to trade together in order to demonstrate how simple it is to generate profits.The fraudster makes it appear as though they are making money by simulating trades after the victim joins the platform. The scam artist keeps coercing the victim into making ever-bigger investments.
There has been noticeable rise in pig-butchering scams in India, which are targeted at investors and spread via fake trading apps. This fraudulent scam involves the distribution of phishing sites and counterfeit trading software through the Google Play Store and App Store.
It’s easy to spot and prevent pig slaughtering frauds.An unknown number sending you a text message The sender tries to talk to you even after you point them that their number is incorrect. You are asked for personal information by the sender. The message requests for a loan or money. The message discusses a new cryptocurrency or provides investment tips.
So,never respond to ‘wrong number’ or random texts from unknown contacts.Never provide a stranger with your address, bank account information, or social security number online. Avoid registering for cryptocurrency investing platforms unless you are certain of its legitimacy and have confirmed it with outside sources. If you are not certain that you know exactly what you are doing, do not begin investing in cryptocurrencies at all.
