In response to the nationwide protests that started on December 28, Iranian authorities have drastically intensified their violent crackdown. They have fired live ammunition indiscriminately at protesters, killing dozens of people, including children, arbitrarily detaining thousands of people, and violently attacking hospitals to hold injured people actions that, according to international law, constitute crimes against humanity.
The Center for Human Rights in Iran (CHRI) reports that between December 28, 2025, and January 5, 2026, security personnel shot and murdered over 27 individuals, including six minors under the age of eighteen. Since identities are still being confirmed, this number is thought to be higher.
Numerous protesters in Malekshahi, Ilam Province, were among the dozens who suffered severe injuries after security personnel opened fire on them. Over 34 individuals have been slain and over 2000 had been arbitrarily arrested as of January 6, 2026, according to Human Rights Activities in Iran (HRANA), a figure that has been steadily increasing.
CHRI urges the UN and other nations to use all available political, diplomatic, and legal avenues to put pressure on Iranian authorities to cease using deadly force against demonstrators, free all demonstrators who have been arbitrarily detained, particularly children, and immediately put an end to attacks on hospitals and medical personnel.
