A woman surprised a Kenyan courthouse when she openly reprimanded her son seconds after he and six others were released.
According to Kenyan newspaper Tuko, a tense and emotional moment unfolded in the Milimani Law Courts, Nairobi, Kenya, when a mother openly scolded her son, as he and six other students were released.
Her son Austin Ochieng and his friends were freed after a week-long detention related to the death of Daystar University student Lonah Kathambi Karani.
After Kathambi died on November 23 at a party at Harmony Plaza Apartments in Ngara, the seven students were taken into custody.
Investigations into the finding of Kathambi’s dead body on the ground floor initially indicated foul play.
However, recent CCTV evidence shown in court proved that the 23-year-old collapsed while attempting to jump from one balcony to another.
Magistrate Dolphina Alego reviewed the evidence and prepared to release the students, she urged them to reflect on their behavior, particularly the role alcohol played that night.
But Austin’s mother could not hide her pain as she recalled years of trying and failing to persuade her son away from detrimental behavior.
She regretted that it took the death of Kathambi for Austin to admit that it was his mistake and give a promise that he is going to change.
The mother questioned her son’s apologies, claiming that it had become routine for him to make an apology before slip back to his bad habits.
