Deepfakes are a kind of cybercrime where a person’s identity is replicated using several technological techniques in order to disseminate misleading information. Deepfake videos, clips, and other content are frequently produced using tools like Photoshop, machine learning (ML), artificial intelligence (AI).
According to Press Information Bureau information generated by users for the purpose of defining offenses as well as information produced by Artificial Intelligence (“AI”) tools or other technologies is subject to the IT Act and its regulations.
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (“MeitY”) frequently engages with the industry and receives input from it to promote ethical use of technologies in order to safeguard Indian users and the Indian internet as a whole from the new harms resulting from the misuse of technologies, including artificial intelligence, and to guarantee accountability towards the law.
In response to the growing concerns over deepfake technology, the MeitY has filed an extensive status report with the Delhi High Court. It draws attention to the difficulties presented by deepfakes, especially when considering false information, invasions of privacy, and malevolent applications, and it offers doable suggestions to mitigate these risks.
