After an investigation into an organized retail crime schemes, authorities have confiscated 12 tons of stolen coffee valued at around $100,000.
According to Commander Michael Ware of Cook County ( Illionois, United States) Sheriff’s Organized Retail Crime Division, the coffee, which was initially from a Wawa convenience store, was found in a Melrose Park warehouse following a tip from an insurance company, FOX 32 Chicago reports.
Ware said, the heist used a technique called “cross-docking,” in which thieves replicate valid shipping paperwork and reroute merchandise before it gets to its original location.
He claimed that in this case, suspects allegedly tried to extort the coffee company by requesting money in exchange for returning the pilfered shipment.
