
In India, 23 dog breeds were banned on March 12, 2024. The Delhi High Court issued the rulling after a committee of experts and animal welfare organizations submitted their findings in response to a ruling that prohibited the keeping of some dog breeds as pets. To stop the dog from breeding, owners of the restricted breed are advised to get their pets sterilized.
These are Pitbull Terrie, Tosa Inu,American Staffordshire Terrier,Fila Brasileir,Dogo Argentin,American Bulldog,Boerboel,Kangal,Central Asian Shepherd Dog,Caucasian Shepherd Dog,South Russian Shepherd,Tornjak,Sarplaninac,Japanese Tosa,Akita,Mastiffs,Rottweiler,All types of Terriers,Rhodesian Ridgeback,All types of Wolf Dogs,Canario,Akbash Dog,Moscow Guard Dog,Cane Corso,American Bandogge Mastiff.
The importation, breeding, and sale of these aggressive dog breeds are prohibited in all Indian pet stores. Breeding and marketing of these illegal dog breeds will be prohibited, including for crossbreeds.
If authorities find that prohibited dog breeds are being illegally bred, they have the power to seize the animals. These dogs will be taken to shelters or placed in new homes through authorized channels, they won’t be abondoned and fines vary.Breeding restricted dog breeds could be a criminal act in the most extreme cases.Veterinary license suspension is another possibility if it is found that a veterinarian engages in these kinds of activities.A licensed breeder’s license will be revoked if they are found to be breeding prohibited dog breeds.
