
At an incredible height of 15000 feet (4556 meters), Margherita Hut also known as Capanna Regina Margherita is located atop Signalkuppe Mountain on the Italian-Swiss border. (14,947 feet.), the highest inhabited structure in Western Europe.
The original hut was built in 1893 and named after the Italian Queen Margherita. For the inauguration, she was actually transported in a sedan chair up to the hut. A massive two-story wooden box-like building took the place of the cottage in 1990. Instead of having a foundation, it is secured in place by steel wires that cross the ceiling of the hut.
The Hut is located in the Italian province of Piedmont, near to the border between Italy and Switzerland.The hut is open from mid-June to mid-September.Alagna Valsesia in the Valsesia valley is the access point of the traditional Italian path that leads to the Margherita Hut, on accessable by foot.
